CA18DET Installation 9 - Engine Removal             Last Updated: 01/09/2008
Thought I'd stick up a page of how I got the CA + stumpy box out in one piece, as I've been told by a few people that it can't be done. The whole job was accomplished in about an hour or so by myself with no assistance whatsoever!

Also in prep I dropped the sway bar and idler arm from the chassis - but left the sway bar and steering rack still attached to the suspension.
Here's where I affixed the engine crane chains - to give the engine the most swing.
I also supported the gearbox with a trolley jack.
Starting to lift engine off the crossmember, first the sump has to clear the sway bar, then can move forward a bit and get the sump to clear the front crossmember.
Crank pulley clears the front crossmember
Water pump pulley, then crank pulley clearing rad support
Crank pulley to clear rad support
Crank pulley clears rad support - able to move engine forward a bit more
Stage 6: Sump over rad support
- got a little stuck at the point, shifter got stuck in brake lines
Sump now completely over the rad support - gearbox still nicely clears tunnel
Front of bellhousing then clears rad support - gearbox now no longer supported by the trolley jack
Extension housing almost clears the rad support, at this point I manually lifted the gearbox over the rad support by spinning it around - whole operation would be much easier without the rad support altogether - might look at making a bolt on one in future.
Lower the engine down
Store on a tyre - notice I can still get my fingers under the sump so at least the sump isn't getting crushed.
