Got some lights on the dash (tick), got some headlights
(tick), stick a screwdriver up a ignition lead and try and start the car
- (tick) I had sparks jumping to the engine from the screwdriver. So
we have ignition.
Right then what about fuel? Dumped the drain plug of the
fuel tank (tick) yep fuel in there, checked the float level (tick) yep
fuel in the carby,
Is the carby working? Reef on the throtlle and see if
the fuel level on the carby moves (without starting the car)..(tick) So
now does it pump fuel? Pull ignition lead out of coil - as sparks and
few could be bad together, then drop fuel line from carby, then get
someone to start the car whilst you hold the glass to the fuel line.
(tick) We have fuel.
So what's left? Maybe headgasket, maybe the dizzy is
screwed, maybe the valves aren't opening...? Well lets check. Plugs OK,
Water OK (don't mind that bit under the thermostat...bit of an
accident), Dizzy goes round, valves go up and down...hmmm
That leaves timing and compression - let's
start with timing as that easier. This is the dizzy at TDC of cylinder
one....hmm the brass bit should be turned 180 degrees around! Ahh see
pic 2 that's better.
So after that I tried to start it again and
BOOM she started first go! Very smoky (see all the grey stuff in the
head) - will take a while to smoke that out. So now that car
runs....what now? New windscreen and probably an exhaust pipe I think.
Very satisfied though the only big screw up I made was fitted the dizzy
completely arse about - but with that little hick up behind me time will
tell the quality of the engine build. To be continued.....
So I need an exhaust now...had a dodgy sidepipe one that
fitted on the A12....but different bolts for an A14! Off to the wreckers
it is....
Other job of the weekend was to get the windscreen
fixed. $160 later...ouch I hate spending money! Got to see the original
colour of the car to sort of a dark blue, (not that dark now)
